ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ Magazine Spring/Summer 2021 By Candace Goforth DeSantis, BS ’94, and Jim Maxwell, BS ’00, MS ’11 By now, it is well understood that the role of women in science has gone largely uncredited throughout history. In recent years, a movement has grown to correct the record and bring attention to the overlooked contributions of women scientists. One of those women is Eunice Newton Foote, whose discovery 165 years ago paved the way for our modern understanding of Earth’s natural greenhouse effect, which is fundamental to the study of climate change. Ken Ditlevson, director of ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ’s LGBTQ+ Center sits in front of flags representing the LGBTQ community.

ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ's history of support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Plus (LGBTQ+) community is well documented. Ken Ditlevson has been the director of ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ’s LGBTQ+ Center since 2014. For Pride Month, ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ Today asked him a few questions about this landmark year....

Dolores Noll, Ph.D., ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ Professor Emeritus of English and pioneer for LGBTQ rights and people, accepts the university’s inaugural Diversity Trailblazer Award in 2010.

Born five decades ago as the Kent Gay Liberation Front at ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ, PRIDE! Kent is the country’s oldest continuously operating LGBTQ student organizations. This campus organization owes its existence in large part to the boldness and courage of one person, Dolores Noll, Ph.D.  Noll came to ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ in 1961 as an instructor in the Department of English and became an assistant professor upon completion of her doctorate. In a time when the atmosphere in the country, and on campus, was not easily accepting of gay students and faculty, Noll came out as one of Kent Stat...
